Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Fine lines and wrinkles sound like something we are always avoiding. What causes them? And what can you do about them? There are three main reasons fine lines and wrinkles appear: dehydration, repeated muscle movement and collagen degradation.

Dehydration

Dehydration creates issues with skin texture. I can’t say this truly causes wrinkles as much as fine lines. Skin tissue can lack sufficient hydration both superficially as well as in deeper layers, which leads to an appearance of fine lines. Often, I hear a younger person say they have wrinkles when their skin is actually displaying a crepey texture and in need of hydration. Yes, drinking plenty of water is always necessary, but you also need the topical attention with products that boost your skin’s hydration, plumping up the skin’s cells. Products like LGK Uplift Eye Gel, Image Ageless Total Pure Hyaluronic Filler, Image Vital C Overnight Hydrating Mask and LGK Calm Replenish Facial Oil are products we love to help the skin maintain hydration, thus avoiding the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Repeated muscle movement

Repeated muscle movement is how lines form around our eyes and across the forehead, which falls into a genetic wrinkle pattern of how your face moves with expression. This is not necessarily a bad thing or totally unavoidable, but there are a couple things you can do to minimize, unless you plan on being expressionless. This is what Botox is all about, as a neuromodulator it inhibits muscle movement to put off reinforcement. Like most things, even Botox is not a permanent solution, where it will require maintenance usually around every 3 months. I also recommend finding a qualified injector, rather than look for the cheapest price in town.  As far as topical products go, neuropeptides can relax and reduce muscle contraction to lessen the reinforcement of these lines. While we love what Botox can do, we love these products for the peptides they contain: Image The Max Stem Cell Serum, Image The Max Stem Cell Mask and Jan Marini Age Intervention Peptide Extreme

Collagen degradation

Collagen degradation leads to fine lines and wrinkles being more apparent with time. Collagen is that supportive underlying tissue, making up 70% of the dermis and as we age, we produce less of it. We don’t reach a point of not making any more collagen, rather collagen production goes down significantly as well as the existing collagen fibers degrading or cross-linking into a less pliable and supportive tissue. This loss of collagen integrity is due especially to UV exposure, which accelerates wrinkle formation. There is no product or treatment you should consider to address fine lines and wrinkles, unless you are first applying regular sun protection. That could be considered 1 step forward with 10 steps back. Products that are proven to support collagen production and reduce degradation by various methods are retinol, hyaluronic acid and vitamin C. Here are a few such products that we recommend: LGK Complex Age Correct, Jan Marini Age Intervention Retinol Plus, LGK Radiant C&E Serum

Prevention

Ideally, you begin using products that counter fine lines and wrinkles before you notice them. Prevention is always the best policy, but good skin care practices are for everyone at any time. Certainly, sunscreen still tops the list as it not only prevents skin cancer, it is also essential in maintaining healthy skin tissue and cell function, which in turn appears as more youthful skin. We have a sunscreen for everyone. Click HERE for our complete collection of sunscreens.

Treatments

As for treatments that improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, chemical peels, microneedling and facials are what we turn to the most. We recommend doing chemical peels and microneedling in a series. Visible signs of aging don’t occur overnight and they won’t be fixed in one treatment either. Microneedling is known as “collagen induction therapy”, using a microneeding device and a serum of stem cells and growth factors to achieve superior rejuvenation. Chemical peels smooth texture and create more even tone with resurfacing at a higher level, but can also promote collagen production. Facials are comprehensive in caring for the condition of the skin, maintaining optimal health to allow for a better response from advanced treatments.

Fine lines and wrinkles aren’t a bad thing!

I want to be clear that fine lines and wrinkles are not a bad thing. I don’t subscribe to the idea of aging as being a bad or undesirable thing. But often lack of care leads to an unnecessary acceleration of the aging process. The science of skin is always advancing and expanding. With that comes new and exciting ways to support your skin’s health and I find that exciting!
